Summer Salad and Jesus

This evening a group of women from church had a gathering at a friend’s house for an event called “Summer Salad Spectacular”. Well, it was delicious. The kitchen counter was adorned with salads of all kinds, some of which I’m not even sure what they were…and we enjoyed some tea and lemonade. A perfectly ladylike meal.

We all split into little groups of conversation in the house and backyard, and it was lovely. The house was beautiful, the weather, balmy, and the fellowship, as filling as our dinner. Fellowship is good for so many reasons. My mom brought a longtime friend who I’d not seen in a while, and in the course of our conversation she brought up the struggle of feeling condemned, and Satan’s voice accusing her that she is never good enough. And I have been there. I know you have, too. When I was younger, I didn’t know that was the Devil trying to scare me and make me feel unworthy; I confused that with the conviction of the Holy Spirit. And they are so different. It took me years to understand and accept that the Holy Spirit does not accuse us, and He does not make us feel like puny slaves that must beg for forgiveness whenever we do wrong. We don’t have to beg for anything. I don’t have to beg my father for love or attention – and I certainly don’t have to beg my Heavenly Father for it. How could our Father waver from His unconditional love and goodness to being punitive and vindictive? Some people honestly struggle with this, and I did for the longest time. His love does not exclude His justice, but it does allow for grace.

Shortly before our gathering was over, we had a devotional from one of the ladies who is also on the worship team and is a fellow choir member. She recommended a book which I have not read yet, but wanted to share because of my interest, and I think it would be very helpful to you. The book is called You’re Already Amazing: Embracing Who You Are, Becoming All God Created You to Be, by Holley Gerth. When she began to speak, it reminded me of the very conversation I’d shared earlier with my mom and our friend.

“You are already accepted by Your Father. He created you, and He likes you! He loves you, and there is nothing you can do to change that. You are fearfully and wonderfully made.

I think we know these things in our hearts, but sometimes our hearts don’t let things really sink in. I know in my heart that God loves me and that I can’t change that, but when I do something wrong, I can be just as my friends and be very mean to myself! That’s when I was smacked in the face with the next thing she said:

“When we disagree with God, we are siding with the Enemy. When God has approved you, but you disagree with Him and say, ‘No, I’m not that great – I’m not good enough’, you’re agreeing with the Devil! Why would you do that?”

Something to think about. Check out this book – I  know I will be. And thank you, my friends, for being the encouragement that God called you to be. <3
